Second Call for Proposals

Clean Aviation second call for proposals: over €350 million to drive aviation towards climate-neutrality by 2050

Innovative fuel systems, more efficient propulsion systems, or novel wing design; these are some of the topics covered in Clean Aviation’s second call for proposals. The call includes over €137 million in EU funding and this will lead up to an overall budget of over €350 million* including private contributions. The call will support cutting-edge technologies for hydrogen-powered aircraft, hybrid-electric regional aircraft as well as short and medium range aircraft to accelerate aviation’s trajectory towards climate neutrality and help make Europe the word’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Funding will also be allocated to impact monitoring of EU aviation research and innovation.

The second call for proposals covers 8 topics in total under the 3 Clean Aviation thrusts, with the following EU funding budget breakdown:

€65 million EU funding dedicated to hydrogen powered aircraft;
€32 million EU funding dedicated to hybrid electric regional aircraft;
€40 million EU funding dedicated to short and medium range aircraft;
In a separate topic, €0.75 million is dedicated to impact monitoring of EU aviation research and innovation.

Axel Krein, Executive Director of the Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking, said: “Clean Aviation’s second call for proposals is an important milestone in accelerating the development and deployment of disruptive research and innovation solutions for a greener future in the regional and short-medium range commercial aircraft sector. I look forward to seeing the outcomes that will help pave the way towards an entry-into-service of new highly efficient aircraft by 2035 to significantly contribute to climate-neutral aviation by 2050.”

The call for proposals closes on 11 May 2023, 17:00 Brussels time. Information Days targeting potential applicants take place across Europe and virtually over the next few weeks.  Clean Aviation’s dedicated Information Day takes place online on 1 March 2023 and registration goes via [email protected]

*€350 million is the total value of the public and private contributions in the Clean Aviation projects plus the supporting projects identified as in-kind contributions.
