Boeing EnCore Interiors showcased several new galley concepts at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in April, including a connected galley concept that features latch monitoring and connected galley inserts. The latch monitoring technology displays an alert when a galley latch is unlocked, which crewmembers can see on their devices or on a panel mounted in the galley. Boeing’s concept also explored how connected galley inserts for a coffee maker could communicate status and alerts, such as tracking on/off status, water consumption and product health—all of which could be sent to maintenance teams on the ground. The concept uses a new Cabin Secure Media Independent Messaging communication standard that allows cabin parts to talk to each other in a standard software language. Boeing envisions that galley inserts and other cabin elements could use this language to automate fault reporting and predict equipment failure. Boeing also has developed a lower profile transition strip for the threshold between the galley and aisle that provides ergonomic improvements for flight attendants who must roll heavy carts over the strip.
